Pride and Prejudice
Spring 2023
Pride and Prejudice was the first mainstage show I was a part of at Loyola. During my time on the show, I served as the Understudy for four different roles - Lizzy, Kitty, Lydia, and Caroline. This experience was difficult for me since I had never been an understudy before, let alone for 4 different characters with one of those characters being a lead. I knew that understudies don't receive much rehearsal time (if at all) during the process. I wish during my time as an understudy at Loyola had a bit more guidance in what it means to be an understudy. it was stressful to try to learn all five tracks for the show (the 5th one was the ensemble track). During this process, I learned that a lot of my memorization techniques are connected with blocking or movement. While I was trying to memorize all of the roles, I realized I had to find different ways to memorize since I did not have the blocking in my body since I was not rehearsing and just watching. This was a major learning moment for me and one of my biggest takeaways from this experience.

Overall, this was a major learning opportunity for me. I am happy that I was in the show and have some understudy experience under my belt. However, if I am presented with an opportunity again to understudy 5 tracks, I would turn it down. I think that task is a bit daunting and something that is not my strong suit. I would be willing to be an understudy for one or two tracks, but nothing more than that.
