Hair & Makeup Design - Arturo Ui

Fall 2024

WARNING: FAKE BLOOD & WOUNDS BELOW

Initial Goals

  1. Expand on my demonstration skills. I know that this role is to support the actors and to show them how to apply makeup and hair designs to themselves. I have little experience doing makeup and hair demonstrations

  2. Another goal I have is to improve my research skills. I already have strong research skills; however, I want to continue to expand and build on my research skills.

  3. To learn about new makeup and hairstyles. This project is focused on hair and makeup styles from the 1940s and I have some knowledge about the style of the time. I want to expand my knowledge of these trends so I can translate my knowledge to the hair and makeup for Arturo Ui.

  4. Another goal I have is to learn more about how to do hair and makeup on other people. I am proficient in putting makeup on myself, but I have minimal experience doing it on others. I do not know how much of this role I will help put makeup on people, but I want to know ways to help the actors apply the designs to their faces.

  5. I want to explore and deepen my knowledge about hair and makeup in the theatre realm. I took the Hair, Makeup, and Wigs Design class last fall and found it very interesting and fun. I am excited about this opportunity to keep exploring this area of design.

  6. For all areas of this project, I want to work on clear and concise communication. I can tend to ramble, and I want to actively work on stopping some of that rambling. I want to make sure everyone hears and understands the communication I convey to people.

  7. I want to work on my design skills in general. Theatre design is something that interests me greatly and I want to keep exploring and gathering new skills and experience.

Final Reflection

During this project, I learned a lot about hair & makeup design - especially special effects. For the show, I gathered research, helped actors with applying hair and makeup, made special effect bullet wounds, made blood packs, and maintained the wigs and mustaches in the show. I had a good base knowledge of the skills from the Makeup, Hair, and Wig Design course which I took last fall (2023). Most of my work started when the process got closer and closer to tech. In the early process, I gathered initial research and had conversations with Rachel (my mentor) on what designs each actor should apply. We had two sessions in which we worked with the actors to help them practice their hair and makeup.

This show was particularly fun to work on since I had to learn how to make a bullet wound and work more on blood effects. For the bullet wound, I built each one on wig lace so the actor (Molly) could reuse one for multiple shows. I used liquid latex as the base and added tissue paper to create the walls of the bullet wound. Once everything dried, I painted it with Ben Nye stage makeup to give the bullet wound some depth. For the complete run, I made 8 bullet wounds. In terms of the blood packs, we experimented with what to make them out of. We ended up making the blood packs with cling wrap since the plastic was thin and easy to pop by the actor. Figuring out how to make the blood packs work was the biggest challenge. The main problem we had was that the blood packs were not showing out of the vest. We had to do multiple tests to try to make sure it would work. There was one particular test in which we went too far (scroll down to see the video); however, we eventually found the perfect balance just in time for the show.

The Resistible Arturo Ui follows Chicago gangster Ui’s rise to power. Echoing how Hitler and the Nazi power took over Germany, I found the message of this play to be very time-relevant due to the election and thought-provoking. I really enjoyed working on a play that gives the community a space to reflect and think about how the themes of Arturo Ui are still relevant to this day and age.

Working on Arturo Ui allowed me to keep exploring my interest in hair and makeup design. Since taking the Hair, Makeup, and Wigs class, I have been eager for another opportunity to work on my design skills in this realm. This project filled a lot of my personal and professional goals. I am not sure if I am going to pursue hair and makeup design professionally; however, I feel like I have a solid base on which to pull if I do get a job in this field. Overall, I am so grateful I worked on this project. I learned more about the design process from a hair and makeup designer's point of view.

In the show, the character Roma gets shot three times - once on the left shoulder, once on her right side, and once in the head. For the two shots in the torso area, we decided to have blood packs for the effect. We had to do many tests with the blood packs since we were having issues with the blood seeping through the vest. For instance, we decided to put the blood packs on the outside pockets of the vest to help with our issues. In one of our tests, it worked a bit too well... so we then scaled it way back. Click on the video on the right to see how we made a tiny bit of a mess (oops). For the next test, they did the final test outside since we did not want to decorate the walls anymore. We were able to find the perfect balance just in time for the show.
